The demand for tea is increasing and continue to increase across the world. Global tea consumption and production are projected to keep rising over the next decades, driving by robust demand in developing and emerging countries due to increased awareness of its health benefits. Tea cultivation in Nigeria is done primarily in Mambila Plateau of Taraba State, however, cultivation and expansion has been limited by competition on land for other uses. Presently, demand for tea is more than supply as only 20 percent (20%) of local demand for tea is met while the excess demand is catered for through importation of tea leaves from other tea producing nations across the world. However, successive adaptive trials were carried out in many lowland areas of the country with the sole purpose of extending tea cultivation in Nigeria. The results of these trials showed that tea can thrive well in some parts of the country to be able to create a niche market. To this end, a multi-disciplinary training was held at Ajassor, Cross River State between 29 November and 2 December, 2022 handled by CRIN Scientists led by Mrs. A.T. Yahaya. The training drew pool of farmers from Etung, Ikom, Obudu and Obubra Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the State, which are identified areas where tea can flourish. The farmers were sensitized on ethical tea cultivation, processing/value addition and economic benefits which involves selection and raising of tea cuttings, soil needs and managements, agronomic practices, pests and diseases management, harvesting, processing and utilization of tea produced, as well as record keeping and marketing. This is a milestone towards the promotion of low land tea cultivation for optimum tea production and processing in Nigeria.
